In 1980-81, I temporarily left the University of Georgia and participated in the National Student Exchange Program at Montana State University in Bozeman. I wasn’t the only newcomer to the Big Sky state, Hal Schlotzhauer had also recently arrived from California to join the painting faculty at MSU.

I had the good fortune to study painting with Hal as we adapted to the Montana weather and cowboy culture. I’m fairly certain that the use of white in my painting palette today, came from the months of  seeing  snow on the ground in Bozeman.

I continue to be inspired by Hal’s use of color and high-energy abstraction in his paintings, as well as his tireless enthusiasm for the creative process.
