Parlor Olympics Everyday Heroes 18" x 24" Oil on canvas 2009 $2195 (framed)

Parlor Olympics, a painting from Karen’s Everyday Heroes Series.

Everyday Heroes – Recent Work by Karen Adams is on exhibit at The Last Resort Grill in Athens, Mar 7 – Apr 4, 2011. An opening reception will be held from 3-5pm on Sunday, March 13.

Karen describes her paintings: “In this series of paintings begun in late 2008, I have recycled reproductions of sculpture to create new figurative imagery. Many of the paintings portray familiar images, such as statuettes of the Discus Thrower from the 5th century and the Renaissance-era sculpture of David by Donatello. I also incorporate obscure replicas of goddesses, warriors, peasants, and animals as subjects. These figures are copies, some are reproduced centuries after the hand-made originals. Using the mass-produced statuettes as models, I create a new generation on canvas. The figures are staged in a still life, but the settings they inhabit are my invention. I believe there is an eternal need for humans to depict themselves through art. I am inspired as a painter to re-create figures of the past, breathing new life into them through change of context and personal vision.”
