Figure Drawings
I have loved working from a model since taking my first figure drawing class at the University of Georgia in 1979. Using quick gestures, contours, and sketches with charcoal and conte crayon, I try to capture the essence of the model's pose. Posture and/or implied movement are often the means for expressing an attitude: the seated figure seems contemplative, the standing figure with raised arms energetic, and the reclining one aloof. I could not have abstracted the figure in some of my other works without knowing and understanding it through drawing. I'm very grateful to all the skilled models that have worked with me.
