Figurative Abstraction
From 1981 through 1985, I explored the figure through color interaction and movement. In works involving two figures, often one is more defined than the other, setting up a psychological tension between the two. Some figures seem to push out from the surface, while others are fragmented, submerged, and nearly obscured. I also found that just as with Greek sculptures that have survived the centuries minus arms and heads, two-dimensional figures without all body parts represented can seem complete and unbroken.
